Panasonic World Solar Challenge 20th anniversary - October 21-28, 2007

Solar-powered transportation owes a great deal to the participants of races and contests such as the World Solar Challenge in Australia. Starting in 1987, this biennial event covers a 3,000-kilometer route from tropical Darwin in the Northern Territory, to cosmopolitan Adelaide in South Australia. The challenge includes not only navigating the route, but involves a great deal of strategy as well, as teams must conserve energy while maintaining consistent speed. History shows that this can be a delicate balance.
Solar cars are not the only vehicles which will be on display for the event this year. Parallel contests involving electric and other alternatively-fueled cars will take place as well. We are showing you their official website before any news or media information is available, so you've got a head-start on following the race. It should be fun![Source: World Solar Challenge]

Ah, what started it all!
1987: GM wins the World Solar Challenge.
1990: Based on their sucess at the World Solar Challenge, GM decides to display "Impact," a prototype electric car. GM says they will produce a production version of the Impact. CARB decides that then all the car companies should make an electric car. Thus, the EV mandate. The rest is history...

Have you seen the South African Solar Challenge 2008 , a two-week race in solar-powered cars through the length and breadth of South Africa. This race is 4200km of some of the most demanding terrain that solar cars have ever seen. This will be a real test of the capabilities and lessons learned here will be a roadmap to the future of Solar and Electric cars.

Interesting competition! I have never heard of it before until now, sounds like we will hear more of it in the future as we are getting more and more "enviornment" conscious.
