More police-ridin' Segway action, this time in Chicago
Yes, you read that right: yet another would-be criminal has been nabbed by the long arm of the law... riding a Segway. Well, we assume that the cop in question must have had long arms, 'cause the Segway is only capable of moving at 12.5 miles per hour, well under what the average reasonably fit man can hit in stride. Of course, no word is mentioned on the fitness of said man, or said cop, but let's all just be glad that the criminal did not get away. Actually, one did get away, but let's not dwell on negatives.
This time, the run-down took place in Chicago after Thaddeus Martyka, the Segway-mounted officer, heard what sounded like a gunshot. Sure enough, when he wheeled his way over in that general direction, he saw the criminals and nabbed one.

Wasn't there supposed to be a Police version of the Segway that goes much faster? I tried to Google such a critter without luck, but seem to recall when it was introduced, a faster version was possible and planned. Perhaps he was on one of these?

Greenflume - there is a competitor to the Segway called the T3 which is marketed towards Security and Police work... is that what you were thinking of?

12.5 mph is about a 5 minute mile. Most semi-serious but casual runners could probably do that pace for less than 1/4 of a mile. To get a feel for this, find your local high school track one evening and try to one a lap in 1:15 - or even just run the entire length of a football field in 17 seconds.
That's how fast the Segway goes - for a much longer time. Still feeling cocky that you could take it down in a race?
