On July 15th, the city of Paris will launch a city-wide twenty-four-hour-a-day bike rental service. The program will start with 750 rental stations with 10,000 bicycles. People visiting the city can get a five-day pass allowing them to pick-up from and return bikes to the stations for €5 (US$6.73) or get a one day pass for €1 (US$1.35). Anyone planning to stick around or visit the city regularly can get a one year pass for €29 (US$39).

1. In Denmark some cities have free bike rentals. You insert a coin ( about 4$ ) and when you deliver it back to one of the many bike parking stations you get your coin back.
The bikes are pretty simple ( no gears) so they are not that expensive in maintenance. They bikes also have ads on them. That doesn't make enough money though so the cities are sponsoring the bikes.
