How about a one-wheeled alternative to a Segway?

A Swiss company has created a one-wheeled transportation device called the Easy-Glider that provides a variety of usage options. The single wheel is integrated with a motor and battery housing and has a handle bar extending from it with the accelerator and brake controls. It can be used to pull you along on a skateboard or in-line skates and it also has a detachable chariot that you can just stand on. The Easy-Glider can apparently drag you along at up to 12 mph for anywhere from nine to sixteen miles (as always your mileage may vary). Charging is an overnight process at six to eight hours. If you think anyone on a Segway looks like a dork, how about someone a skateboard getting dragged around by one of these. Can you imagine dragging this thing home if the battery dies while you're out and about. Pricing is unknown but it's likely to only to be financially appealing only to those with more hipness and cash than common sense.

You'd definitely need killer abs to use this thing with a skateboard.

Is there any mechanism in place to keep this from skipping all over the place on a bumpy surface? It seems to me that unless it's really heavy, it will not get much traction.

I like it. I can't think of another powered "vehicle" that occupies so little space - it looks to be easily trunkable. And unlike a Segway, the user could drag the Easy-Glider into work or a shop and not have to hassle with locking it up. What other powered vehicle can you say that about? If the price is right, I could see youngsters taking to these. They should consider a name change, "Easy-Glider" sounds more like a product for the elderly, not hipsters.

Funny enough I was just discussing the idea of a Segway like unicycle the other day. This isn't quite what I had imagined, but it's close. A more traditional unicycle would have the advantage of putting the weight over the wheel. And in seqway like fashion, the computer would keep you upright... somewhat.
