Hyundai might bring their first US diesel to the Veracruz
Recently we reported that Hyundai sees diesels as possibly a more cost effective alternative to hybrids, and now it looks like they may be bringing one to the US market as soon as 2009. Hyundai will be offering a new 3.0L V-6 turbo-diesel in the new Veracruz CUV in the Asian and European markets, but it doesn't yet meet Tier II bin 5 requirements. Hyundai is currently working on making the diesel, dubbed the S-Engine, fifty-state legal. While I am glad that Hyundai is getting onto the diesel bandwagon, do any of you more informed souls have any idea why the automakers are only putting them into their highend vehicles? It seems like a sure fire way of causing diesels to fail here in the US. When an Accord, Camry or Sonata has one which gets 30+ mpg in the city, it will become a hit. I'm putting off replacing my 1999 Subaru Forester until a reliable vehicle w/diesel comes along.

Unfortunately a lot of American consumers still have a pretty negative view of diesels because of the noise, smell and soot. As with other new technologies most car-makers are aiming at higher end vehicles to introduce new diesels and demonstrate their newfound refinement. From their they will likely spread downmarket. There are definitely diesels coming to more mainstream models in the next couple of years. Volkswagen will be reintroducing clean diesels to much of their lineup starting this year and Chrysler will be adding diesels as well. Honda is bringing their own diesel to the US market in 2009.

I have 2 vw jetta tdi's and I love them, can't go wrong with 34 city and 47 highway.

i dont know if its avalable in the us but in aust you can buy a 300c with a 3.0lt aprox 200ci turbo deisel. claimed 7.2lt per hundred klms.

Sam is partially right as people have this vision of smoke exiting an exhaust pipe. If the truth be known most consider diesels as sluggish and boring... something of which they were but no longer are. Add to it the cost of manufacture, they lose some of their shine. If one runs the fuel numbers their pay off isn't quick but it is relentless. As for our family, we own a Dodge diesel and next year, a diesel jeep (pending introduction of the Cummins modular diesel in other Dodge vehicles) will be parked in the drive way.
