New Smart ForTwo off to a quick start in Germany

The second generation Smart ForTwo and the latest generation of the Mercedes-Benz C-Class officially went on sale in Europe last week and jumped right out of the gates. Over the weekend German Mercedes and Smart dealers experienced their busiest weekend ever, with 470,000 customers coming in to check out the two new cars. Over 45,000 orders have already been placed for the new Smart and an additional 75,000 orders have been received for the C-Class. So far there is no word on how many American customers have signed up for the $99 reservation program that SmartUSA has set up for the American launch of the ForTwo early next year.

The new Mercedes-Benz C-Class and the new smart fortwo got off to a great sales start throughout Western Europe last weekend. In Germany, dealers registered the highest number of visitors ever in their showrooms with a total of 470,000 existing and potential customers to experience the two models. 75,000 orders have been received for the new C-Class sedan at the time of its market launch. At the same time, 45,000 customers have placed their orders for the new two-seater from smart.
"We are extremely delighted with the successful launch of the two new products and the very positive response from our customers," said Dr. Klaus Maier, Executive Vice President Mercedes Car Group, responsible for Sales and Marketing.
Test drives are also very much in demand, and about 7,000 test drives have already been conducted with the new C-Class since last weekend. An additional 10,000 customers have made appointments for test drives within the next few days. The new C-Class and smart fortwo models will be introduced to the remaining markets in the coming months.

45 thousand orders for Smart in the first weekend? WOW, that's not too shabby! Somebody should tell GM that perfection is not a requirement to sell cars. Then again, judging by their historical fit and finish, they already know this.
Quit screwing around waiting for the “perfect batteries” and build the damn Volt!

I don't see why the Smart won't gain a foothold in the States. Good mileage, great safety features, compact size.
It's a really, really cool little car.

Actually, I've always found the ZAP cars cute. How far can this little beauty travel without needing a charge?

Electric version of the new smart fortwo isn't out yet - the gas/diesel ones all have a 33L (8.7 gallon) tank. So the diesel has a 620 mile range.
