Electrified Porsche 912 boils the tires

The video lasts only 14 seconds but it shows a Porsche 912 converted to run on electric power smoking the tires with enough style to make John Force blush. But that's not why I really thought the video was important to post. The info box on the YouTube page calls attention to a small outfit called Grassroots Electric Vehicles, a company based in Florida that provides variety of parts and advice for DIY electric car builders. The shop offers motors, adapters, controllers and batteries in addition to all the hardware and switches necessary for a home-based conversion. They're even into solar options, scooters and NEVs. And if you don't want the hassle converting your own vehicle, they have a few for sale.

It's cool. However. . . If you look at the vehicles they have for sale, and the estimate range per charge, they are mostly 40-50 miles, and in one case as low as 20 miles. The appeal of these conversions remains limited, for now. I trust that eventually li-ion batteries and AC motors will trickle down into the homebrew EV scene.

In answer to the above comment extended range is not everything,just keep a record of your daily trips and see how many times you exceed forty or fifty miles.Some people will but most of our short trips could be made in a ZEV at minimal cost to ourselves and the environment.It will be a long time and maybe never before electric gives the range we have come to expect from conventional vehicles.It always amazes me why people expect an electric to be exactly like our gas powered cars,everything has its intended use.If you need to move house you hire a van you don't deride your car for not being capable,likewise an electric should be used for its intended purpose (short trips) not expected to replace the family transport.
