Aeroalcool: Flying clean on biofuels

Filed under: Biodiesel, Etc., Ethanol, Transportation Alternatives

A rather intelligent coworker and I were having a discussion the other day about the prospects of completely doing away with all fossil fuels in America. One sticking point that he brought up was flight. It is no secret that airplanes use a fuel that is derived from dead dinos. I mentioned that I would do some research on the subject and get back to him. It didn't take me long to find that planes are capable of flying on biofuels. Biodiesel is already being used, but has a few drawbacks, due to the temperatures of high-altitude flight. A company in Brazil, Aeroalcool, is close to getting an ethanol fuel certified for flight. Fellow Brazilian aircraft manufacturer Embraer has already started selling planes for crop-dusting with piston-powered prop-driven engines.
