Chevrolet Volt picture surfaces at the Chicago Tribune

Ok, now I suppose you want a sneak peak of the Chevy Volt, don't you? We're still keeping the pretty pictures secret for a little while, but the Chicago Tribune has apparently decided they can print up a photo of the Volt with their ad for tomorrow's newspaper.
The text of the Tribune's caption reads like this: "If the Chevrolet Volt works as advertised, you could travel for weeks, if not months, without a drop of gasoline. You can expect from 50 to 525 mpg, so get ready to thumb your nose at the gas pumps – at any price. General Motor [sic] unveiled the high-mileage concept at a media preview of the Detroit Auto Show. The electric, powered by lithium-ion batteries, is designed to go up to 40 miles before recharging the batteries."
Two things strike me as odd about this clipping. First, the typo. Second, 525 mpg? That's higher than anything I've read about the Volt. I wonder how they came up with this number. In any case, check out AutoblogGreen at midnight for the rest of the details.

BTW why isn't this front-end on the current Impala?

If you go to the high res pictures and take a look at the last chassis photo, you'll see that the vehicle is a concept of a hydrogen fuel cell car, not a plug-in hybrid.

Nice looking car. For a change its styling doesn't look like some funky European electric car. If it comes in at a reasonable price point I will buy one. I second one of the previous posts...build it!! This car was needed yesterday.

The labelled diagram of the car clearly states 16 kWhr battery pack capacity, which indicates a range greater than 70 miles, not the 40 miles the article claims. Somebody's wrong.

The car does not use all of the 16 kwh battery pack in "electric" mode, some is held in reserve to start the generator and provide additional power for acceleration. Avoiding full discharge also prolongs battery life, and prevents what GM calls "turtling" - a decline in battery power at low state of charge.
8 kwh provides for the 40 mile range.

Found this info in regards to the claim about 525 miles per gallon:
In addition, the Chevrolet Volt is designed to run on E85, a fuel blend of 85 percent ethanol and 15 percent gasoline. Using E85, fuel economy of 150 mpg would translate into more than 525 miles per petroleum gallon.

I am missing something here. Why is this car such a big deal when all of the prior offerings got mileage upwards of 100 miles per charge, and were considered market failures?
