London parking authority setting fees based on CO2 emissions
A couple of years ago the city of London, England began charging a congestion tax on cars coming into the city, as way of cutting down on the insane amount of traffic, particularly in the central part of the city. Now the local parking authority in the Lambeth section of London is looking at a new way of promoting more efficient vehicles. They want to base the rates for parking permits on the emissions rating of the car. The most efficient vehicles would only pay £30 per year, increasing to £200 per year for the heaviest emitters. This would be added to the existing road tax of £30 to £215 a year which is also based on the emissions rating and would effectively double the cost of putting a car on the road. The borough of Richmond announced a similar plan in October but it hasn't been approved by the local council yet.
