Canadian ambulances test hydrogen fuel-injection systems
Two ambulances in the Waterloo region are testing hydrogen fuel injection systems. Hiller Truck Tech and Canadian Hydrogen Energy have teamed to develop and install a system that converts distilled water into hydrogen and oxygen. Both gasses are pumped into the diesel fuel stream to reduce harmful emissions.Officials say the technology has been used on larger diesels but is relatively new to smaller vehicles. The system costs $4,500 to $5,000, including installation. If testing proves positive, other vehicles in the ambulance fleet may be fitted with the system. Other green steps the region has introduced include 10 percent ethanol in the fuel, downsizing fleet vehicles to match the job, and putting catalytic converters on busses and running them on low-sulfur fuel.

Is an ambulance really the type of vehicle you want to be testing experimental fuel systems on? Couldn't they use something a little less dependant for "life and death" situations with the same duty cycle...like a delivery truck? Nobody dies if that breaks down. Just what you want when you have a heart attack...oh great...they sent the experimental amubulance. Do they get the med student to do the heart surgery in the hospital too?
